Daniel AGGER Empty Daniel AGGER

Post by Dallas Thu Jun 21, 2012 12:58 am

Daniel Agger is looking forward to life under Brendan Rodgers at Liverpool, and the Denmark international is even prepared to sign a new contract with the club.

Agger has just enjoyed one of his best campaigns for Liverpool, combining with Martin Skrtel at the heart of a defence that was only bettered by the two Manchester clubs in England this season. Poor home form saw the Reds struggle in the league, but a Carling Cup triumph provided some reward for Agger's consistent displays.

The cultured defender took that form into Euro 2012, producing a Man-of-the-Match display in Denmark's victory over Netherlands, and after 170 appearances for Liverpool since he joined in 2006 it was wondered whether Agger - who has not always enjoyed the style of football at Anfield -would consider moving on.

However, the former Brondby man has no such plans and, much like goalkeeper Pepe Reina, is looking forward to working under Rodgers. Agger currently has two years left on his Liverpool contract, and he admits he would extend if the club opened talks.

"It's no secret that I'm happy to be in Liverpool. Otherwise, I would not have been there for six years," Agger told Danish website Sporten.dk. "I have not discussed a new contract, but if they come with an offer I will surely sit down and talk with them. It's not something that is urgent, for I have contract until 2014, but if they ask I will listen.

"I am looking forward to meeting the new coach. I've seen what he has done at Swansea, and it has been impressive."

Daniel Agger has today spoken to Danish daily Politiken and has told them he would like to stay at Liverpool.

Rumours have been rife for the past two months, linking Agger with clubs like Barcelona and Manchester City, with the latter showing concrete interest in the Dane.

Liverpool have already rejected bids from Manchester City reported to be around £23m. The former is holding out for at least £27m.

Agger told Politiken:

“I have not been told anything by the club regarding the transfer. It is not up to me to judge whether it’s weird or not. That is how the club has decided that it should be. I can not do anything. “

“This period is every year, but I take it quietly with a smile. There has not been anything from the club so far, there’s no reason for me to be worried. “

He then went on and said that he knows there has been interest from City:

“I know there has been something from Manchester City, but i dont know what Liverpool thinks of it”

“I’m fine with my situation. The club must find out what they want. I have heard nothing from them. I’d rather be here, but it’s not me who has the decision at the moment.”

He was asked about his newest tattoo on his knuckles too. He replied that he made it a while ago and has nothing to do with his transfer.

Agger: “Liverpool may just make the transfer, even though I have two years left. But no, I have not changed my mind on the subject when i said will not play for other English clubs than Liverpool, but sometimes you can still get in a situation where it’s not your decision.”

“I will not stay in a place where I am not wanted, but I’d rather have be here. This is my priority.”

On Barcelona rumours:

“That you must ask Liverpool about. It is not me but the club are negotiating on. I accept the Liverpool way of doing things."

Sorry Thomas

Richard Buxton

Mirror reporting Daniel Agger is 'desperately close' to signing new #LFC deal alters greatly with what the player told us yesterday at #WBA

Agger said there was "no news" on contract situation & when asked if talks were underway, "no, I don't think so" (i.e. not yet) #LFC

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/liverpool/9557022/Liverpool-open-contract-negotiations-with-Denmark-defender-Daniel-Agger.html

Now manager Brendan Rodgers wants to ensure there is no repeat of the uncertainty of the last transfer window.

The Dane has two years remaining of his current deal, and Liverpool insist they always planned to renew terms with the 27 year-old.

Those negotiations have now formally started, allowing Rodgers to cement the immediate futures of both his centre-halves. Martin Skrtel signed a new contract during pre-season.

Agger’s career on Merseyside has been plagued by injuries, but he has started the season having cemented his partnership with Skrtel.

The Danish international, who missed Thursday's Europa League trip to Switzerland to prepare for this weekend's visit of Manchester United, joined Liverpool from Brondby in 2007 for £5.5 million.

Agger is good news at least, got bruising on the bone round the knee, need further xrays to determine the length of his absence.

DANIEL AGGER is on the verge of signing a new long-term contract with Liverpool FC.

The Danish defender was the subject of interest from champions Manchester City back in the summer but the Reds rejected their advances as boss Brendan Rodgers was determined to keep him at Anfield.

Agger's current deal expires in 2014 but talks over an extension, which began last month, are now nearing completion.

The 27-year-old, who was signed from Brondby back in January 2006, revealed to the ECHO that he's currently playing with a minor fracture in his knee.

“Daniel's a real warrior,” said Rodgers. “He's got a little bit of pain in there but he played in the game at Norwich last weekend and did very well.

“I am very fortunate here that I have got a group that has that real warrior mentality and he is one of those guys.”

Teenager Suso, who made his first Premier League start last weekend, will also soon put pen to paper on a new contract. The Spaniard's current deal expires next summer.
