General News
A FOOTBALL fan killed himself because he never recovered from the guilt he felt from selling a ticket for the Hillsborough game to a friend, an inquest heard.
Stephen Whittle, aged 50, had suffered from anxiety and depression since the tragic match in 1989, Bolton Coroner’s Court was told.
Ninety-six Liverpool fans lost their lives at the FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest, at Hillsborough stadium, Sheffield, on April 15.
Mr Whittle, of Elizabeth Street, Atherton, had sold a ticket for the game to a friend, who died during the incident, the coroners court was told.
He took medication for his depression and although his family knew of problems in the past, they did not know he was still affected by the tragedy.
On February 26 this year, Mr Whittle jumped in front of a train between stations in Daisy Hill, Westhoughton, and Hag Fold, Atherton.
Doctor Ashok Atrey told the court: “He sold a ticket to a friend of his who went to Hillsborough to watch the Liverpool match and unfortunately he died.
“He was offered counselling but he wasn’t keen on it.
“He said he had support and he didn’t need it.
“He was asked about suicidal thoughts and he didn’t have any.”
The Kop and Anfield was turned into a shrine with scarves and flags after Hillsborough
Police were called to the railway line near North Road in Atherton, where Mr Whittle was struck by a Northern Rail train heading to Atherton station.
Coroner Jennifer Leeming said Mr Whittle had died from multiple injuries consistent with being struck by a train.
She recorded a narrative verdict saying: “He took his own life while the balance of his mind was disturbed by his suffering from diagnosed depressive illness.”
She added: “That awful tragic event that happened so long ago is still reaching out and touching people.
“Especially for a man who was so keen on football, it was a big part of his life and to have that awful event associated with such a pleasure must have been troubling as the years went on.
“He was clearly a very private man who didn’t confide, even the good things, to his family.
“He was clearly a popular man both in work and at home.”
Mr Whittle had worked as a fabricator at PPG Industries Ltd in Hindley Green for around 20 years.
Very sad

Ye I read that earlier. Very sad, so many years after and still effects peoples lives big time.
That's why imo its important that they get justice. Will go someway towards the healing.
How many have died since as a result of Hillsborough?

The Energy Regular has given final approval to Bord Gáis to increase its domestic gas prices by just under 22% from 1 October.
The price rise will affect the company's 475,000 customers
At the end of July, the Energy Regulator had given provisional approval for a 22% increase, pending the outcome of a public consultation.
The regulator said the company had sought a 28% increase.
The decision is being attributed to a rise in international wholesale energy costs.
In a statement, Bord Gáis it had not increased prices since 2008, but given that the wholesale price of gas for the coming winter has increased by 33%, the company has no option but to increase its tariffs.
Bord Gáis Energy's standard business gas tariffs will also increase by up to 21.72%.
The company said it remained committed to working with customers to help them manage their bills.

Kenya hunt for kidnapped UK widow after husband killed
Police in Kenya are hunting a gang who killed a British man and kidnapped his wife at a resort in the country.
The couple were staying at the luxury Kiwayu Safari Village, north of Lamu Island, when the armed men attacked.
Kenyan police said the motive was unknown, but they were treating it as a "bandit attack".
The Foreign Office, which has not yet named the couple, called for the release of the woman, who is said to have been taken away by speedboat.
A spokesman said: "We have deployed a consular team from our High Commission in Nairobi and are offering all possible support to the family of those involved.
"Our thoughts are with them at this difficult time We are working to secure the safe and swift release of the British national who has been kidnapped and ask those involved to show compassion and release the individual immediately."
'Easy entry'
The website for Kiwayu Safari Village says it has "organic security protocols as well as a professional security structure which provides us with overarching security and safety 24 hours a day."
It adds: "Our relationship with the local community, its fishermen and the local authorities is positive and mutually beneficial. We regularly review our security and safety to ensure it is both comprehensive and current."
Police commissioner Mathew Iteere said the couple had arrived at the resort on Saturday after visiting Kenya's Masai Mara reserve and were the resort's only guests, staying in a cottage.
Speaking at a news conference, Mr Iteere said: "They do not have doors, those cottages. They are using the cloth as the doors. So I think they gained entry so easily and it was only one shot.
"Maybe they wanted to take the two and he [the husband] resisted and that's why he was shot."
High alert
There was no evidence to suggest the attackers were from Somalia nor that Islamist group al-Shabab, which has links to al-Qaeda, was involved, he said.
Kenyan officials said a police officer had seen six men taking away a woman in a speed boat.
The Foreign Office continues to advise against all but essential travel to within 30km (18 miles) of Kenya's border with Somalia. There have been previous attacks by Somali militia into Kenya, it says.
Kenyan police said they had been on high alert in many areas of the country on the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks in the US.
Mr Iteere said reinforcements had been sent to the north-east and coastal provinces, including to provide more roadblocks.
"We are going to continue [these measures], not just because of this incident, we had done it because of that anniversary of September 11," he said.

These are the amazing scanner images of the abdomen of a young Irishman caught smuggling cocaine at an airport in Brazil.
The man, identified only as P.B.B., was stopped as he tried to board a flight from Sao Paolo to Lisbon in Portugal and then connecting to Brussels in Belgium.
He was carrying 72 bags containing almost a kilo of cocaine inside his intestines.
The 20-year-old man, who was caught last Monday at Congonhas Airport, was taken to the Santa Misericordia Hospital where the capsules, containing 830g of cocaine, were removed from his body.
Police said it was his nervous behaviour that tipped off the authorities.
The drugs would be worth approximately €150,000, police sources said.
He has now been charged with international drug trafficking which carries a sentence of up to 15 years.
Last week a Colombian woman, who flew from Argentina, died in a New Zealand hospital after a bag of cocaine burst in her body.
Sorlinda Vega (37) arrived from Buenos Aires carrying 26 packages weighing 1oz each.
More than 70,000 people a day are estimated to pass through San Paolo international airport and approximately five a day are arrested for drug smuggling.
The airport, which has connections to 53 countries, is known as the main exit point for drug mules bringing cocaine from South America to the rest of the world.
Drug mules are paid anything from €1,000 to €6,000 per trip.
The largest contingent of those arrested are from South Africa, where poverty makes the lure of easy money even more attractive, but San Paolo’s jails contain smugglers from all over the world.
Brazil’s penal system is notoriously slow and it can take up to six months after arrest for the first court hearing or 12 months for a sentence to be passed.
Prisoners are allowed parole after two-thirds of their sentences have been served, but have to stay in the country which can be particularly difficult for foreigners with no jobs or family support.
